An Indian language text editor based on Om transliteration mapping. An integrated package that allows word processing in a number of Indian Languages.

Om Transliteration mapping scheme:

This transliteration scheme is designed as an improvement over the ITRANS scheme for typing Indian language characters using the standard keyboard. ITRANS is a carefully designed scheme that has been in use for many years now. Om mapping is meant to add a few more features to enhance the usability and readability, and has been designed on the following principles:

  • Easy readability

  • Use of case-insensitive mapping:  While preserving readability, this feature allows the use of standard natural language processing tools for parsing and information retrieval to be directly applied to the Indian language Texts.

  • Phonetic mapping, as much as possible.  This makes it easier for the user to remember the key combinations for different Indian characters.

Mapping character combinations are consistent across different Indian languages. This allows viewing the text in any of the output languages without having to retype the text suitable to that language.

Telugu alphabet is shown here as an example:

a aa i ii u uu rx rx- e ei ai o oo au an' a:

k kha ga gha ng-

cha chha ja jha nj-

t'a t'ha d'a d'ha nd-

ta tha da dha na

pa pha ba bha ma

ya ra la va sh shha sa ha l'a qs-a r'

A search engine for Tamil text books stored in this transliteration scheme has already been built from off-the-shelf software.

Integrated Editor

An integrated package to transliterate texts in Om transliteration into multiple Indian languages has been developed. The editor allows creation of texts in Microsoft Word in native language font. The text entry is done using Om Transliteration Mapping. The ouput file can be saved in Ascii format or in Unciode Format and even can be sent as an email. (Requires nothing more than the appropriate font on receivers end to view the file).
