Why I am at CMU:

I am a graduate student in the Master of Software Engineering (MSE) program. Operated by the School of Computer Science (SCS), the MSE program is a cooperative venture of the SCS and the Software Engineering Institute (SEI).

Select this for information on the MSE program. Alternatively, you may contact Phyllis Lewis at : (412) 268-7713 or by electronic mail at

mse-info@cs.cmu.edu

I will complete the MSE program this December and 1994 is already going by too quickly.

One of the great features of the MSE project is the Software Development Studio. Most Masters programs have a one-semester project. The Studio, runs for the entire duration of the 16 month program. Our Studio project team, the Talus team, is working on the specification, design, and implementation of software for the Robotics Institute, specifically for its Lunar Rover Initiative.

What I normally do:

My Real Life is in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where I do far too little snowboarding and far too much working for a living. Don't take me wrong - I enjoy my profession, but I'd rather be out hiking, bicycling, doing my favorite volunteer activities, and the like.

Prior to that, I was born and raised in the Minneapolis, Minnesota area, which explains my tolerance for cold weather and Nordic & Canadian (You bet, eh?) accents.

I work for Digital Equipment Corporation as a Solutions Architect. The title can be interpreted as just about anything. Our Digital Consulting group works with anybody that will buy our services -- from Advertisers to Zoos. That includes the Air Force, Telcommunications Companies, Banks, local non-profit organizations.

My job is to work with the customer at any level, executive to technical, and figure out what their most difficult business problems are. Our analysis tries to uncover the best combination of technical and non-technical solutions to their problems. Suprisingly, most customer problems (60% or so) can be resolved with non-technical solutions.

If we recommend technical solutions, I follow up with architecture-level design, hardware/software configurations, and maybe custom application development. I'm here at CMU to gain expertise in all of these technical areas and include some management principles for software engineering organizations.
