About me

Ph.D. candidate, Computer Science Department, Dipl.-inf., Dipl.-math., Technische Universität München, Germany, 2004 Office: Wean Hall 5119 |
I am a graduate student at the Computer Science Department of Carnegie Mellon University. My advisor is Carlos Guestrin, and I am part of the SELECT Lab of Carlos Guestrin and Geoffrey Gordon.
I am planning to graduate in Summer 2008. Here are my application materials, and here's my slides.
News:
- 06/28/08: Check out my Matlab toolbox for optimizing submodular function!
- 06/28/08: I will be presenting a tutorial at ICML '08 on "Beyond Convexity: Submodularity in Machine Learning".
Research interests
My research interests include machine learning algorithms
and
probabilistic reasoning both in theory and in complex real world
systems. I am studying
optimization and approximation of value of information problems in
probabilistic models, which frequently arise in large distributed
systems
such as sensor networks. My main focus is on observation selection
problems. with applications including environmental
monitoring, building automation, traffic prediction and activity
recognition. Have a look at the SEPIA
project page.
As an example, with Jure
Leskovec
and others, we recently considered the question of selecting
informative blogs on the Internet. Here is the paper
and our Cascade
project
page.
Activities
- In Fall 2006 I was TA-ing 15-251 (Great Theoretical Ideas in Computer Science). In Spring 2006 I was TA for 15-781 (Machine Learning).
- I co-organize the Machine Learning Lunch Seminar and the Intelligence Seminar.
- I'm also a passionate classical guitar player.
