  Topic:	Knowledge Discovery on the WWW
  Advisor:	Prof. Jieh Hsiang, ( Dept. of CSIE, National Taiwan Univ.)
  	In this research, I focused on the problem of information gathering and extracting on web pages, especially those that present useful information in a shared style, for example, pages of search engines. A simple counting method is developed to recognized the repeated pattern, shared by the information item, in an HTML file. A web spider, which fetched a linked page only when the page's link agrees with the given pattern, was built. I also built a metasearch engine, which rearranges items in the query result pages of several search engines.

  Topic:	Compression of Image Sequence
  Advisor:	Prof. Ja-Chen Lin Dept. of CIS, National Chiao Tung Univ.
  	In this group study, we focused on motion estimation techniques, and compared several algorithms under metrics such as MSE(mean square error) and SNR(signal-to-noise ratio). A frame in the image sequence usually differs slightly from its previous frame, mainly caused by the moving of the objects in the scene. By figuring out how the objects move, we can predict a frame with reasonable accuracy from a previous frame without actually receive all the frame information. A high compression ratio can be acheived by this. Motion vectors are those these algorithms designed to find for representing object motions. Although the predicted frame is not prefectly identical to the target frame, the differences between them is very small. This difference information costs only a little amount of storage space. The algorithms studied find the best motion vectors for each block in the frame rather than for each object. Algorithms are chosen from three aspects: spatial search, genetic evolution, and interpolation with an additional latter frame.
