Transit Geekery, Or, Buses I Have Known
This page is for me to keep track of what transit routes I've been on.
If you don't understand why anyone would bother, or why anyone
would take great pleasure in taking a bus to a mall at 7:45 a.m. for
no purpose other than to ride a new bus route, congratulations: you're
"normal". Have a nice day.
"!" means I've ridden the entire route. "*" means I've ridden
such a small part of the route that I probably shouldn't bother
to count it at all. "#" marks "special" routes such as 44D-Drake, a.k.a.
"RAIL SHUTTLE", which bustituted for the Castle Shannon-South Hills Village
segment of the T during construction work, and the mysterious
43S-South Hills Express.
Note: Some of these links are broken. Blame PAT.
Light Rail ("the T"):
42S! (including the "Penn Park" spur),
43S# (mysterious),
Subway Local# (which was
supposedly canceled months before I rode it),
47L! (including former 42L),
52!
Inclines: Mon and Duquesne (both "!", of course)
Buses:
Total: 88 / 222 = about 40% (excludes inclines)
Routes ridden that no longer exist: 4 (12U, 26U, 42L!, NP)
Routes ridden that are shrouded in mystery: 2 (SL, 43S)
Notes: Transit routes on PAT are numbered counterclockwise. Buses
going northeast from downtown have low numbers (e.g. 1A). Buses going
west have numbers in the 20's. Routes going south, such as the various
T branches, are numbered in the 40's. The 52-Allentown line runs a little
more easterly than the 42S and 42L, so it has a higher number. The 61's
we know and love run east, and so on. The numbering isn't perfect -- the
74A ranges from the northern East End, which is numbered in the high 60's
and 70's, to the southernmost reaches of Squirrel Hill, which is numbered
in the low 60's -- and there's no system to those routes that are,
like the 501, "diametric" (crossing downtown) rather than "radial"
(boomeranging into and out of downtown).
But at least there's some system, unlike Tri-Met which
seems to assign numbers at random.
Of course, that explains why most of the routes I've ridden are
50s or 60s, since I live one block from the 61A/B/C.
There appear to be 230 or so regular PAT routes (the web site lists 238,
but a few of those are special-event service only). As of 21 January 2002,
this means I've ridden a mere 15% of all PAT transit routes.
