Projects -- Validation
Assistive TechnologySpring 2005
Prof. Jen Mankoff
This phase of your project involves validating the success of your project. A good test, whether or not it involves users, must have a logical connection between your the goal of your project, your test plan, and your analysis.
Depending on the type of yroject you are doing, this might include a study of your system, examples and argument showing the breadth of situations your tool can handle, and so on.
Writeup
Your writeup will be due on 4/27, the second date for final presentations. Your paper should be between 6 and 8 pages long, including figures, references, and all other extraneous matter.
Because this is the final phase of your project, your writeup should be a comprehensive overview of your project. It is acceptable to re-use text for pieces of this (e.g. the literature survey) from past writeups. This writeup should also be longer than the past ones. As with your proposal, you should lay out the problem you are trying to solve, and your approach to solving it. Additionally, you should describe your validation.
I generally advise my students to approach a paper with the follow questions in mind:
- What did I do? This is the place where you lay out the problem, and state your plan
- Why is it interesting? In answering this question, you may want to give the bigger picture related to your problem
- How is it different from past work? This is your literature survey.
- How did I do it? Here you describe your user study, methods, & etc
The format of your paper should fit the requirements laid out in the CHI publications format guide. You may also find the guide for authors of full papers informative.
