The Ungulate House Garden: March 1999
March 2
We have decided to look for an organic vendor of the fruit plants
we want, so delaying the Burpee order.
March 7
Put together a mini greenhouse for inside, and got the scanner
working. Pictures have been added to previous entries!
March 14
It just keeps snowing. Never more than an inch or so on the ground, but
well, it keeps staying there. We had to move the rose barrell back another
yard toward the house and rig it a "raincoat" so it wouldn't keep becoming
a small, icy lake. Just as my compost pile was starting to show a little
heat, too. *sigh*
last of the shopping -- i hope!
Through the miracle of the internet, I just sent in the last of the orders,
for strawberry and raspberry plants, lemongrass, shallots, feverfew and.
I wasn't able to to find an organic source for the berries, unfortunately,
so we ended up with Burpee for them(which does have a lovely site, with
lots of information.) And of course, every time I read a seed catalog,
I find something else to grow, in this case the Echinacea Tennesseensis
and feverfew. The Lime Basil tempted me heavily, but I resisted.
I had been thinking of getting echinacea for a while, but my underdog instincts
took over when I saw the listings at Johnny's for this one, which is officially
an endangered species.
getting things started
I started two flats of seedlings (basil, thai basil, brandywine, "beefy
boy hybrid" and roma tomatoes, snapdragons, lavender and parsley. They're
in our pantry window, with an additional light source of a plant light
on a 12 hour timer. Almost all the seeds that are left want to be sown
in the ground, with the exception of the yellow pear tomato seed packet,
which seems to have wandered off from the others. As I contemplate
the tomatoes, I'm thinking of trying to build water-walls for them out
of our ever-present supply of two/three liter pop bottles. Tony and Moira
from organic-l built some out of plastic milk bottles, but all our milk
comes in cardboard.
