Disclaimer: These notes reflect the amount of content that I can type while others are talking... Stuff is certainly missing, especially since I was switching between the timeline and notes documents.
Talked a little about the literature that we've found so far and then worked our way into talking about milestones and what we want to accomplish. After deciding on these items, we plan to work out time increments in which to fit all of this stuff. See timeline page.
Some discussion of the use of scenarios and personas in the construction of our prototypes. What are the implications of using "names" and "shared stories" as the basis for thinking about some of our design. Some names might be graduate student, professor, secretary, etc. There would be stories to go along with each of these names, to ensure that each group member understands the point-of-view of each group.
We are planning to do multiple prototypes, in order to attempt to isolate different design guidelines. This will allow us to test our hypothesis isolated from one another...not just in a single system.
Need to look at other kinds of graphic designs in order to motivate our thinking. Hex designs on barns, pieces of fabric, etc? Mapping physical stuff in the world...DIS paper on using physical metaphors to building interfaces (Interaction-relabeling).
Must avoid having design guidelines be too high a level. How specific must they be?
Cut down on the signficance of the door study + interviewing. We will interview 6 people.
We are moving away from modeling. At least, we all feel that way right now. Let's get some modeling references for our web page, even if they don't have link to an online reference. Perhaps we can create .pdf files that are only accessible within CMU?
To DoHow much participation do we want from Jodi? Answer: Unknown.
Where should we look at doors. We had some ideas: CFA, GSIA, SCS, etc. Should probably look at areas where departments overlap: e.g. bowels of Porter, Wean. Might be better to look at doors of people whose work we don't necessarily know or are not aware of. Should also carry a lab notebook or sketchbook with us on each of us, which we can use in the future steps.
Elaboration on time & activity, as a part of discover, observation and cataloging. Activity: there are group activities, such as around the time of the HCI seminar, when faculty are either out in the hall waiting to go to seminar, or hiding in their office because they don't want to go. Other cases when collaborators are some distance away, and there is some investment to visit them when they are not responding to e-mail and other forms of communication. How to deal with giggling + music in the Rhino lab...
We should look for themes and issues. Jodi usually does this before starting a project, but it hasn't happened yet.
