Jeff's Door Action Study Notes

TimeLocationNotes
4:20pmWEH 71xxBegan taking observations. I sat in front of the elevators, with a view down the 7100 and 7400 corridors.
4:20pmWEH 71xxSaw a student look into an office with an open door, apparently looking for someone in particular. That person was not apparently not within, because they left after almost walking in the door. This illustrates how people in a multi-user office might be interrupted.
4:27pmWEH 71xxI did not actually observe the following, but I imagined it while watching a person walk to their office to drop off some books, and head to the restroom. As this was happening, it appeared to me that this person walked down the hall, peered into an office, went to their office to drop off their stuff, and then walked back to talk to a person in the earlier office. How might our door interaction device help or hinder this kind of interaction?
4:32pmWEH 71xxI witnessed a person walk down the hall, stop briefly in an open door to chat with someone about some brief issue, perhaps just checking in, and then continue on their way to the elevator, presumably heading home. Again, how might our door interaction device help or hinder this kind of interaction?
4:36pmWEH 71xxObserved a person walk down the hallway, discover that the door they were looking for was closed, and walk immediately to the elevator. They did not bother to leave a message. Would they have left a message if there had been better affordance for it? I don't believe that either of the doors they examined had message boards or other mechanisms to support this.
4:39pmWEH 74xxTwo people lingered in the hall for five to ten minutes talking. This illustrates how hallways can get loud. They were not loud enough to prompt others to shut their doors, however.
4:42pmWEH 74xxSaw a person walk down the hall, linger at a door for a moment, and then walk on. It was not clear why they lingered at the door. This makes me wonder if changes to a door's decoration are noticed by people who walk by the door on a regular basis. Could a change in decoration cause these people to pause and take notice as they wandered by? What is the application of the door device as an electronic bulletin board.
4:45pmWEH 71xxThe looking-inside-open-doors phenomena...People as they are walking down a hall typically look inside the open doors as they pass. This might trigger memories relating to that person. It would seem that our device would interfere with this triggering of memories in a negative way. People might forget to tell others specific things, simply because they did not see the person and feel that they were accessible. Perhaps the most difficult tasks in building a door system is mimicing the feeling of accessibility that you get from an open door.
4:55pmWEH 71xxObserved a person walk to a closed door, linger at the door for a moment, and then walk away. They did not appear to leave a message.
4:59pmWEH 71xxObserved a person walk to a closed door. She appeared to either knock or try the knob. She walked down the hall further, and then returned to the door. At this point, she put down their bag and walked back along the hallway, looking at other doors. Then she returned to their bag and sat down in front of the door, apparently to wait for the office occupant. She even got out her laptop to work while she waited.
5:06pmWEH 71xxObserved two students walk down a hallway. On their way, one student stopped to examine some handouts that were left sitting on the floor. Handouts just left out on the floor, where everyone can see, can be thought of as useful reminders, esp. if you happen to be walking past the office of a teacher from your class.
5:08pmWEH 71xxThe two students continued down the hall and stopped at the same closed door as the girl, two entries previous. They also sat down to wait at the door, while talking with the girl.
5:10pmWEH 74xxObserved a person leaning up against a door, apparently reading something on it. It was not clear if this person was waiting for someone, or if they happened to be walking past the door on their way to comewhere else.
5:11pmWEH 71xxThe three students, from the entry before last, give up waiting for whomever they were waiting for, and decide to leave.
5:14pmWEH 71xxObserved the person from the entry before last walk past me and pause at a door down the 7100 corridor. They read something on the door and then moved on, stopping briefly at another door before stopping to talk with a person they met down the hall. Perhaps this illustrates that random people really do look at the doors of people they do not know.
5:35pmWEH 7xxxThe action seems to have died down in this hall quite considerably. I will conclude my study with another hour of observations tomorrow, probably in a different location.
