Adsl Subsidy Information
News
The subsidy is on for the 2000-2001 academic year. The amount is
$400.
What you have to do for any type of connection
Take receipts to the CS main office for reimbursement. If you got in
on the initial CMU adsl
bulk discount then your total subsidy will be slightly larger
according to the speed you use. $15 for lowest speed, $37 for
midspeed and $119 for high speed.
Sample calculation 1
Let's say I live by myself, and choose to get a 640Kbs line. I want
the turnkey home installation.
Immediate expense: 50 (modem) + 99 (connection) + 99 (installation)
+ 195 (fall fees) = $443
Subsidy amount: 400
Future expense: You will be required to pay for the spring semester
and summer semester later on.
Sample calculation 2
Let's say I live with two other CSD PhD students, and we choose the
1.6Mbs line. We don't want the turnkey home installation.
Immediate expense: 50 (modem) + 99 (connection)
+ 355 (fall fees) = $504
Subsidy amount: 3*400
Future expense: You will be required to pay for the spring semester
and summer semester later on.
Subsidy FAQ & policy
- Does it matter what kind of connection I get?
- The purpose of this subsidy is to allow people to work from home,
and to enhance the quality of grad-student life. The best connection
for doing this is presently a CMU ADSL connection, since it offers the
highest bandwidth and lowest latency to campus, while providing access
to all campus services (such as the library and zarchive). In some
locations ADSL is not available, and you may want to investigate
getting a cable modem or ISDN as a substitute.
- How is this subsidy going to be paid?
- The subsidy will be paid through a reimbursement system. Once you
have collected enough receipts to cover your subsidy, bring the
_original_ receipts into the CS main office, where Kathy will have you
fill out an expense claim form. You will then be reimbursed. If you
have multiple people living in a house (and more than one semester's
subsidy), then you may claim partial reimbursement _at most_ once a
semester. To minimize administrative overhead, monthly reimbursement
is not allowed.
- I already have a qualifying high speed connection to my house.
Can I claim the subsidy?
- Yes. Bring in receipts for the fall, and you will be reimbursed.
- What period does this subsidy cover?
- It is one year, covering the period from the beginning of this
academic year to the beginning of the next academic year.
