Here is the text of the Pennsylvania Sierra Club's endorsement of Wofford for Senate, reprinted without permission: In its desire to help elect candidates who understand the need to maintain a safe environment and who have the courage and vision to work for proper supporting legislation, the Sierra Club is pleased to endorse the candidacy of Senator Harris Wofford for re-election to the U.S. Senate. Harris Wofford has a long record of working on behalf of the environment. He introduced a successful proposal to protect Pennsylvania state parks and forests from the harmful effects of planes flown out of the Antler military Operations Area. As a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) committee, Wofford has worked to craft legislation to limit out-of-state trash imports. In 1993, he introduced successful legislation making enterprise zones eligible for EPA clean-up grants, and he was an early supporter of legislation to provide seed money for the voluntary clean-up of non-Superfund sites suffering toxic contamination. He is currently working on the EPW committee to ensure that Superfund reform will lead to a more efficient use of EPA resources to encourage faster and fairer clean-up. Harris Wofford's consistent support for the environment is demonstrated through his legislative record. The League of Conservation Voters graded his voting record on environmental issues at 94% for 1993, the highest score among Pennsylvania's Members of Congress. On the public health front, Wofford has worked on the EPW Committee to pass the Safe Drinking Water Act and has supported protecting the public from radon gas and lead exposure. As Pennsylvania Secretary of Labor and Industry, Wofford implemented the state's new Right-To-Know Program to alert the public to toxic emissions. Wofford has supported numerous initiatives to encourage international cooperation to protect the environment and supports incorporating environmental concerns into international trade agreements. He is also a leading advocate of promoting cleaner manufacturing and new environmental technologies.
