Dr. Cheng is a Postdoctoral at Computer Science School, Carnegie Mellon University, USA . Before this, he was an associate Professor of Xi'an Jiaotong University. He received Ph.D degree in Pattern Recognition and Intelligent Systems from Xi'an Jiaotong University in 2003. Since July 2000, he had been with Xi'an Jiaotong University, where he had been a team leader of Intelligent Vehicle Group at the Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics before going to USA .

His current research interests include computer vision, pattern recognition, multimedia, and hardware implementation of intelligent systems, intelligent driver-assistance and safe warning systems, intelligent vehicle. The team that Dr. Cheng was leading in XJTU had developed an intelligent driving platform-Springrobot, which has important social effect in China . Dr. Cheng has over 40 publications including one textbook-Digital Signal Processing (Tsinghua University Press, 2007) and 11 journal papers. He has been a member of IEEE and Associate Editor of IEEE Computational Intelligence Magazine. He is a reviewer for IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems, IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems, IEEE Transaction on Circuit and Systems for Video Technology, Journal of Electronics (in Chinese), Intelligent Automation and Soft Computing, and 8th IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems, and 863 High-Tech plan projects. Dr. Cheng serves as Registration Chair of the 2005 IEEE International Conference on Vehicular Electronics and Safety, Program committer member of the 2005 International Symposium on Intelligent Vehicle and Finance Secretary of the 2002 International Symposium on Nonlinear Theory and Its Applications. He is a member of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society and Intelligent Transportation Systems.

Dr. Cheng was teaching Digital Signal Processing and Introduction to Embedded systems for junior students at Automation department and also Advanced Digital Signal Processing for graduate students in Xi'an Jiaotong University.
