Thunderbird (for Linux):
- Once the account has been created (following the steps on the previous page), open Thunderbird and click "Tools", then "Account Settings":

- Select "Outgoing Server (SMTP) from the left column, then select the SCS SMTP server from the right side (which should be named "smtp.srv.cs.cmu.edu") and click "Edit":

- Change the port number to "587", then check the box next to "Use name and password". Enter your SCS username in the box, then select the radio button next to "TLS" under the "Use secure connection" section:

- Click "OK", then "OK" again. You should close and restart Thunderbird to ensure the changes take effect. You will now be able to send mail to non-cs.cmu.edu email addresses from an off-campus connection. Note: when the first message is sent, a dialog box will appear warning of the identity of the smtp.srv.cs.cmu.edu server. You should select "Accept this certificate permanently", then click "OK":

You will also be prompted for your password - enter the same password you use to read mail, then check the box to save the password. This will prevent you from having to type you password each time you send mail, but it will not effect password settings for reading mail.
