How to configure Thunderbird
in Linux
To configure the Thunderbird email client on linux systems to access your SCS email account, take the following steps:
Note: If you are using Thunderbird for the first time, or if no email accounts have been configured yet, Thunderbird automatically opens to the account creation screen. In that case, you can skip the first two steps below. If you see an "Import Settings" screen, select "Don't import anything"
- Open Thunderbird and click on the "Tools" menu, then select "Account Settings"
- Click the "Add Account..." button at the bottom of the accounts column to the left to open the "New Account Setup" dialog, then select "Email account" from the list and click "Next".
- Enter the information as you see it in the following example. Enter your own information where you see "John Smith" and "jsmith+@cs.cmu.edu". Make sure you add the + after your username in your email address. When you're done, click "Next".

- On the next screen configure your incoming and outgoing mail servers. Be sure to select "IMAP" first, then enter the information as you see it in the following screen shot. Click "Next" when you are ready.

- In the next window, the username that you supplied earlier in your email address appears in both fields. Remove the + from both, then click "Next".
- In the next window, you may choose a name for your account, or accept the default, which is your email address. Click "Next".
- Finally, you should see a window like the one below which summarizes your account information. Check the information in your window against the screen shot below and use the "go back" button in your window to fix any typos or omissions. Click "Finish".

Note: When prompted for a password, you should use your mail password, a special password that is used only when checking mail. If you do not have a mail password or aren't sure, contact the Help Desk at 8-4231.
That's it!
Congratulations! You've successfully configured the Thunderbird email client to read your SCS email. If you encounter any errors or if you have any further questions, contact the SCS Help Desk at help@cs.cmu.edu or on the phone at 8-4231.
