Accounts & passwords
In order to make use of SCS computing facilities, one must have an "SCS user account" (note that this is different from an account on a local machine). An SCS user account provides the following services:
- A Kerberos ID and password that can be used to login to Facilitized Unix hosts on which one has a local account.
- A SCS Windows Windows domain ID and password which can used to login to Windows hosts in the SCS domain.
- A local account on a general-use Linux host.
- An e-mail address which forwards our Corvid system (or another address, if one prefers).
- A directory in AFS.
- The ability to print to SCS printers.
- The right to local accounts on various SCS general-use hosts.
- Help desk and other SCS Facilities-provided user consulting.
There is a monthly charge for an SCS user account. This charge must be paid for out of CMU funds. There is no additional charge for per-machine local accounts for a user once the SCS account has been created. There is no relation between one's SCS account(s) and accounts in other administrative domains at CMU, such as Andrew or ECE.

Getting a user account
To get an SCS user account, print out and fill out an SCS account application [ PDF]. Your account must be sponsored and signed by an SCS Faculty or senior staff member.
All SCS Masters and PhD students should contact their program coordinator in order to obtain an SCS account.
Local machine accounts
In order to be able to login to a Facilitized Unix host, or have your e-mail forwarded to such a host, you must have a local account on it. Such local accounts can be created by the SCS Help Desk once your SCS user account has been created. Once the local account has been created, you can use your SCS Kerberos ID and password to login to that host.
Your SCS Windows domain ID and password can be used to login to any Windows host in the SCS NT domain.
If your SCS project needs an account of its own (for example, so it can be added to AFS ACLs), you must fill out and submit a signed SCS account application. There is no monthly charge for such project accounts.

When your SCS user account is created, you will ordinarily receive two passwords:
- A password for your SCS Kerberos ID.
- A password for your SCS Windows domain account.
