Whenever I try to compile something with cc or CC I get this big long error message nagging me for a license. Do I have to buy a license?
If you are currently paying software maintenance and support to SCS facilities for your SGI, your system is under EduCare SoftwareCare which includes licenses for Mips C/C++ from SCS facilities. Just e-mail help@cs.cmu.edu with your machine name and we will be glad to help you. You will get a new license within 2 business days. If you can't wait that long, we can create an emergency license in the meantime.
How can I get a SurfZone Supportfolio account?
(These off-site links will open in a new browser window.)
Go to http://support.sgi.com/channels/ and sign up. To get full use of the knowledge base, patches, and software updates, you will have to link your SurfZone account with a serial number of a system that is supported under EduCare SoftwareCare.
I think my monitor is flaky. I've played with all of the buttons and knobs but nothing seems to work. Help!
A number of SGI monitors have been dying lately. Common problems are "fuzzy" screens, the loss of red blue or green, blank screens, and monitors that refuse to turn on. Sometimes replacing the monitor cable helps, but not always. If you are covered under EduCare SelfCare then we can call SGI and request a replacement. If not, chances are we have a retired monitor in stock you can use.

Don't reboot your computer. These error messages appear because Facilities has disabled the fam daemon for security reasons. If you are using 4Dwm, you can download the following X config files and copy them into your home directory:
