Printing on Windows Vista hosts

Most Facilities-installed Windows hosts will come deployed with one or more networked printers already installed. If you need to install additional printers, most of the printers on our printer lists are available for installation through the server

Installing printers

If you know which printer you wish to install, you can use the Printers and Faxes control (available as a Control Panel item or under the Start menu) to install the printer. To do so:

  1. Open the Printers and Faxes control.
  2. Select "Add a printer" under Printer Tasks
  3. Use the AddPrinter Wizard to add the named printer: \\\printername

You can also browse for printers on monolith:

  1. Open the Printers and Faxes control.
  2. Select "Add a printer" under Printer Tasks
  3. Instead of specifying a name for the printer, leave the dialogue box blank and click "Next".
  4. In the resulting list, double-click on "SCS" (if it is not already expanded) and then double-click on "MONOLITH". You should see a list of printers.
  5. Select the printer you want.

Printing on the wireless network

You can print to the publc printers of the SCS network via the CMU wireless network only if you are verified by authentication with a valid SCS account. Mapping a drive to the path \\\pc_dist will allow you to athenticate your account by requesting your SCS username and password. You will be able to install the SCS public printers once you are authenticated. The following steps will assist you to map a drive and authenticate:
  1. "Right Select My Computer" or "My Network Places"
  2. "Start" then select "Map Network Drive..."
  3. Select a drive letter in the "Drive" box
  4. In the "Folder" box, type the path for server and shared resource in the following format: \\\pc_dist
  5. Select "Finish"
  6. A request for the SCS user name and password will be prompted.
  7. Enter "scs\username" and "password" .

(We recommend when printing remotely off campus the user should access SCS network using VPN )

Refer to the above instructions to install your printer.
