May 2014 Critical Windows, Office, and Adobe patches

May 16, 2014

On May 13, 2014, Microsoft released critical patches for Windows and Office. Adobe has also released patches for Flash Player, AIR, Adobe Reader and Acrobat, and Adobe Illustrator.

* All Windows PCs must be patched. *

To patch your PC:

Click on the update icon on the taskbar. It is a globe or yellow shield with an exclamation point, depending on which version of Windows you're running.

If you do not have such an icon, run Windows Update by going to the site:http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

After patching, you must reboot your PC in order for the patches to take effect.

If you are the administrator for a SharePoint server, see:https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/ms14-022

for information about a critical, remote code-execution vulnerability.

If you use the .NET framework, see:https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/ms14-026

for information about an important vulnerability.

Adobe Flash Player patches:

If you are running Flash Player version 13.0.0.206 or earlier on a Windows PC or a Mac, or version 11.2.202.356 or earlier on Linux, you should upgrade. To see which version of Flash you are running, visit:https://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

If you are using the Flash Player that is installed with Google Chrome, or Internet Explorer 10 or 11, your version of Flash on that browser will be updated automatically.

To upgrade Flash if you are not using one of the above browsers, download it from:https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Each browser that you use to view Flash content will need to be updated.

If you use Adobe AIR, see: http://helpx.adobe.com/security/products/flash-player/apsb14-14.html

for update information.

Adobe Reader and Acrobat patches:

Adobe has released patches for Adobe Reader and Acrobat X, and for Reader and Acrobat XI for Windows and Macintosh. If you are running version 10.1.9 or earlier of Reader X or Acrobat X, or version 11.0.06 or earlier for Reader/Acrobat XI, you must update.

To update your version of Reader or Acrobat, choose

Help > Check for Updates

from the application's menu.

Additional information about these patches is at:http://helpx.adobe.com/security/products/acrobat/apsb14-15.html

Adobe Illustrator (CS6) patches:

If you use Adobe Illustrator, see:http://helpx.adobe.com/security/products/illustrator/apsb14-11.html

for update information.

Please contact help@cs.cmu.edu or call the SCS Help Desk (x8-4231) if you have questions or problems with applying these patches.
