Retirement of SCS local bboards and Usenet Groups

DATE: Monday, June 10, 2013

SERVICES AFFECTED: SCS local bboards and Usenet groups

DETAILS:

The SCS local bboards and Usenet news groups will be retired on Monday, June 10, 2013.

Readership has dropped drastically as more modern and mainstream technology has replaced the older text only news service. With such limited use, the cost of supporting the news service is no longer in line with end user needs.

The retirement includes all:

  • local boards: such as cmu.cs.general, cmu.cs.scs, cmu.cs.robotics, etc.
  • campus boards: such as cmu.misc.market, cmu.fms.announce, cyrus.official.cmu-policy, cyrus.assocs.*, cyrus.academic.*, cyrus.org.*, etc.
  • usenet groups: comp.*, misc.*, rec.*, sci.*, soc.*, talk.*, news.*, alt., etc.

Campus will continue to maintain various CMU bboards in folders on the IMAP server cyrus.andrew.cmu.edu which mail clients can browse.
