SCS Facilities Support for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
SCS Computing Facilities is pleased to announce the addition of Linux support for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS for 64 bit systems under the Dragon computing environment.
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS is supported on all recommended desktop PC hardware (http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~help/purchasing/recommended_pcs.html). As with all Facilities Linux offerings, laptops are not supported.
The 12.04 LTS will be supported on desktops for the entirety of the vendor.s support cycle for LTS releases, in this case until April of 2017. Support for 10.04 on desktops will be ending when the vendor.s support window ends in April of 2013. (Prior to the 12.04 release, LTS releases were vendor-supported on the desktop for only three years.)
Support for using Ubuntu 12.04 as a server OS on supported hardware platforms is expected to be available by the end of the calendar year, 2012. In keeping with the vendor's support cycle for its LTS in a server deployment, Facilities will support 12.04 as a server platform until April of 2017.
For more information on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Dragon please see the Help Pages at http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~help/unix_linux/linux/ubuntu.html.
Note: Ubuntu's "dist-upgrade" mechanism is not a supported method for upgrading an existing SCS Computing Facilities-supported 10.04 system to 12.04.
If you would like to have your system installed with or upgraded to the new offering, please use the PC Installation form to request this new OS (http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~help/forms/pcsoftinst.html).
Please contact the SCS Help Desk at x8-4231 or send mail to email@example.com if you have any questions regarding the support of Ubuntu 12.04.
