LINUX.GP Upgrade Announcement

May 14, 2012

On May 23, 2012 SCS Facilities will upgrade the Linux general purpose machines' (linux.gp.cs.cmu.edu) operating system from Fedora 10 to Ubuntu 10.04. In addition to the operating system upgrade, we will also be introducing new server hardware in support of the LINUX.GP service at that time. After the upgrade, the LINUX.GP alias will direct you to the new servers. There will be a brief transition period where the old servers will remain up to allow any existing processes to complete.

For any users who wish to test the new Ubuntu environment before the upgrade, SCS Facilities has set up a test environment at LINUX-BETA.GP.CS.CMU.EDU. If you have any feedback about this new environment for the LINUX.GP service please send that along to help at cs.cmu.edu. Please note that this beta test environment is not running on the new hardware and is only intended to provide a test and not a production environment.

Please contact help@cs.cmu.edu or call the SCS Help Desk (x8-4231) if you have questions.

Thank you for your attention,

SCS Help Desk
