Urgent: Critical Windows security patches released

September 9, 2009

Microsoft released new patches for critical Windows security vulnerabilities on September 8, 2009. Because these vulnerabilities could lead to a remote attacker taking over your PC, everyone must patch their PCs as soon as possible.

* All Windows PCs must be patched ASAP. *

To patch your PC:

Click on the update icon on the taskbar (it is a globe or yellow shield with an exclamation point, depending on which version of Windows you're running).

If you do not have such an icon, run Windows Update by going to the site:

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

You must reboot your PC in order for these patches to take effect

There is also a currently unpatched critical vulnerability in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 that could lead to a remote attacker taking over a vulnerable PC. We will be automatically deploying the Microsoft-recommended workaround for this problem to hosts in the SCS Domain running Vista or Windows Server 2008. This workaround will take effect when your PC reboots.

If you are the administrator for a Windows host running the Microsoft IIS FTP server, see:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/975191.mspx

for information about a security vulnerability affecting this software.

If you have any questions or problems applying these patches or if you have any issues with your PC after they are applied, please contact the SCS Help Desk at x8-4231 or send mail to help@cs.cmu.edu.

Thank you for your attention,

Help Desk
