Symantec Endpoint Protection now available for SCS users

SCS Computing Facilities is pleased to announce the introduction of Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) as part of the SCS Windows baseline software. SEP is similar to the Symantec Antivirus (SAV) protection that has been part of the baseline suite for many years. However, SEP now includes antispyware protection as part of the bundled software package. As a result of this upgrade, we will discontinue Spy Sweeper from the standard baseline remove it from all SCS Windows hosts.

Some users may already have SEP installed on their Windows computer, as we have been actively deploying the client on all new computer installations since August 2008. To determine if SEP is already on your computer, see our HelpWeb page at:

http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~help/security/symantec-check.html

We encourage all Windows users to run the SEP installer at their earliest convenience. The new SEP installer is now available on Monolith:

\\monolith.srv.cs.cmu.edu\pc_dist\symantec\endpoint protection\11.0.2

A FAQ page for Symantec Endpoint Protection is available on the SCS Help Pages at:

http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~help/security/sep_faq.html

Running the SEP installer will automatically uninstall Spy Sweeper, if it is detected. Otherwise, the installer will continue to install SEP as expected. Be aware that this installation may take approximately 5-10 minutes. During the install, it may appear that nothing is happening, but it is working. You will be prompted to restart your computer after installation is complete.

Note: Anyone using Spy Sweeper Home Edition will be notified individually with instruction on how to install SEP.

Starting February 9, 2009, SCS Computing Facilities will begin automatically updating all hosts that do not have SEP installed.

Please contact the SCS Help Desk at x8-4231 or send mail to help+@cs.cmu.edu if you have questions regarding the SEP upgrade or removal of Spy Sweeper from your computer.

Thank you for your attention,
