SCS Mail Server Problem May 11, 2007 Update

On Thursday afternoon May 10, 2007 the SCS Computing Facilities mail server ugli went off line due to a hardware problem. By 5:00PM today (5/11/2007) Corvid services have been restored to normal functionality. If your mail was stored on the server that experienced the disk failure, your mailbox has been restored from the previous night's backups. This means that any mail that you received after the backups occurred (approximately 4:00 AM on 5/10/2007) and prior to the hardware failure (at about 12:30 PM on 5/10/2007) will have been lost.

During the period today when the system was being restored, you may have experienced the following:

  • SPAM processing (or other automatic mail operations controlled by Sieve scripts) may not have worked
  • old messages that had already been read were marked as unseen
  • folder subscriptions may not have displayed as expected

These problems have been resolved and the data and services have been restored. If you experience problems reading your mail, receiving new mail, or accessing old mail (except for mail that was received during the "lost mail" period above) please contact help@cs.cmu.edu or if it is after hours call SCS Computing Operations at x8-2607.

We apologize for any problems or inconvenience this outage may have caused.

Thank you for your attention,

SCS Help Desk
