Stage Two of the LINUX.GP operating system upgrade scheduled

On Tuesday September 25, 2007 SCS Computing Facilities will begin the second stage of operating system upgrades to the Linux general purpose machines (linux.gp.cs.cmu.edu) from Red Hat 9 to Fedora Core 5.

The upgrade is being done in a staged manner allowing users time to migrate their work to the new operating system. In stage one, Facilities upgraded two of the five machines. The second stage consists of two more machines being upgraded. In January 2008, the final machine upgrade will be done completing the upgrade of linux.gp.cs.cmu.edu machines.

There will be several improvements with the upgrade including:

  • A larger shared /tmp directory
  • ssh will now support the more secure and widely supported ssh protocol version 2
  • FC5 will be installed as a 64-bit OS
  • The memory on the machines will be upgraded from 2GB to 4GB
  • Various languages and applications will be upgraded

For more details about the upgrade and the associated changes please see our help pages at: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~help/accounts_passwords/linux.gp.upgrade.html

If you need to login to one of the servers that have not yet been upgraded, you can login to linux-rh9.gp.cs.cmu.edu.

Note: FTP will NO longer be available once the servers are upgraded to Fedora Core 5. The more secure SCP and SFTP protocols will be used instead.

Please contact the SCS Help Desk at x8-4231 or send mail to help@cs.cmu.edu with any questions or concerns regarding these upgrades.

Thank you for your attention,
