SCS VPN Certificate Update

The SCS Computing Facilities VPN client has two profile options which can be used to authenticate to the SCS VPN service, the certificate based SCS profile and the pre-shared key based SCS1 profile.

The certificate used in the SCS profile is set to expire on Monday, January 23, 2006. All SCS VPN service users should update the SCS profile and certificate on their VPN client prior to the expiration date.

A script to update the SCS profile and certificate is now available on the SCS Help web page: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~help/networking/vpn/cert-update.html

You will no longer be able to connect to the SCS Computing Facilities VPN service using the SCS profile after the expiration date unless you update the SCS profile and certificate.

NOTE: Users who have not updated the SCS profile and certificate will still be able to connect to the SCS VPN service using the SCS1 profile. However, we strongly recommend using the more secure certificate based method of authentication used in the SCS profile. The SCS1 profile should only be used in cases where users can not connect to the SCS VPN service with the SCS profile.

Please contact the SCS Help Desk at x8-4231 or send mail to help+@cs.cmu.edu with any questions or concerns regarding this update.
