Networking
SCS Computing Facilities supports most networking throughout the School of Computer Science — services including desktop connectivity, DHCP, domain-name service, Virtual Private Networking (VPN), dialup access — plus planning and maintenance of the SCS network infrastructure.We are currently reallocating our IP addresses. This process will prepare the SCS address space for computers that will be located within the new Gates Technology Center. Please refer to the IP-reallocation project details.

There is no firewall between SCS and the rest of the internet. Potential intruders scan each host on the SCS network many times per day, looking for security vulnerabilities. To compute safely in our open environment, please become familiar with our security documentation.DSL & cable remote access
We do not provide any "broadband" (DSL, cable, etc) networking services for remote access; neither does CMU Computing Services. If you want high-speed network access from home, there are a few broadband options to consider, but there is no specific vendor that we recommend.Remote Access

How to
- Fix the "Unable to resolve NetBIOS name" problem
- Use Netregister to request an IP address or add/change host registration information
- Configure your computer to obtain an IP address via DHCP
- Access the network using wireless networking
- Change your iPass client login ID and passwords
- Manage your Kerberos instances with the SCS Web-based interface
- Determine the hardware address of your computer
- Verify settings for your machine in the SCS Doman Naming System (DNS)
