Local dialup access

About

For local dialup access, SCS Computing Facilities provides a multi-line modem bank that supports both PPP and SLIP protocols and can be reached through a single phone number:
412-621-1139
V.42bis V.90 56K bps, 16 lines
When you dial in, you will be connected to one of several Cisco terminal servers. Your SCS user ID and Kerberos password can be used to authenticate to the server, and your host will be assigned a hostname and IP address dynamically.

We do not enforce any hard restrictions on the total amount of time per week or per month that one can connect to the SCS modem pool. However, any connection, whether idle or not, is automatically terminated after 18 hours. It is expected that people will be considerate of others in their use of the modems.

Hostname assignments

The terminal server will assign a hostname of the following form:
ASYNCN-M.NET.CS.CMU.EDU
where N is the 1-2 digit line number on the terminal server to which you are connected, and M is a number that identifies the terminal server
The terminal server itself will have a name in one of the following forms:
  • CSM.NET.CS.CMU.EDU
  • TSM.NET.CS.CMU.EDU
You can finger the terminal server to see who is currently using it. For example:
finger @CS1.NET.CS.CMU.EDU
