Configure Thunderbird for MacOS X - II
Phase II - Encrypt outgoing email
- Once you have configured your client to access incoming email, open Thunderbird and click "Tools" > "Account Settings" > "Outgoing Server (SMTP)"
- Select the SCS SMTP server (which should be smtp.srv.cs.cmu.edu) on the "Settings" panel, as shown below left, and click "Edit"
- Change the port number to "587," then check the "Use name and password" box. Enter your SCS username in the box, then select the radio button next to "TLS" under the "Use secure connection" section:
- Click "OK", then "OK" again. Close and restart Thunderbird to ensure the changes take effect. You will now be able to send mail securely.
- When you send your first message under the new configuration, you may see a dialog box warning about verifying SMTP server's identity. Select "Accept this certificate permanently," then click "OK"
You will also be prompted for your password - enter the one you use to read mail, then check the box to save it. This arrangement will eliminate the need to re-enter your password each time you send mail, but it will not affect password settings for reading mail. Note that this procedure is insecure: Anyone who can access your computer can then read your e-mail and send mail as you.
