Configuring Outlook 2016 for Windows (Cyrus IMAP E-mail)

Note: These configuration settings only apply to accounts using our legacy Cyrus IMAP server. Read the main email page for more information on the SCS email transition, and configuration instructions for newer campus-hosted email addresses. Use of Outlook 2016 is strongly recommended, as it is the currently supported version by Microsoft, but instructions for configuring Outlook 2010 are provided as well.

Setting Up a New Account

If Outlook has not already been set up to access your IMAP account, you will need to provide Outlook with some configuration settings before using it to read your mail.

The first time you launch Outlook, you should be presented with the Add Account wizard. (You can also access this wizard at any time by choosing File > Add Account.)

Choose the option for Manual setup or additional server types

Choose the second option for POP or IMAP. Click Next >.Screenshot of Outlook setup, choosing POP or IMAP

Enter account settings

Outlook will require the following settings to connect to your SCS IMAP account:Screenshot of Outlook setup, IMAP settings

User Information:

Your Name:How you would like your name to appear on mail you send to others
E-mail Address:The email address you want to use when sending mail

Server Information:

Account Type:IMAP
Incoming Mail Server:imap.srv.cs.cmu.edu
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):smtp.srv.cs.cmu.edu

Logon Information:

User Name:Your SCS UserID
Password:Your SCS Mail Instance Password
Remember Password:Check this if you would like Outlook to save your password

Once this configuration is filled in, you will also need to adjust several settings in the Internet E-Mail Settings dialog box. Click the "More Settings..." button at the bottom-right of the window.

Adjust Advanced Settings

On the Outgoing Server tab, make sure the option for "My Outgoing server (SMTP) required authentication" is checked..Screenshot of Internet E-mail Settings, Outgoing Server

On the Advanced tab, specify the following port and security settings:

Incoming server (IMAP):143
Connection Type:TLS
Outgoing Server (SMTP):587
Connection Type:TLS

We recommend increasing the server timeout to around five (5) minutes.

Final Configuration

To Finish configuring Outlook:

  1. Click OK to exit the Internet E-mail Settings dialog box
  2. Click Next in the Add New Account dialog box
  3. Outlook will test your settings
  4. Click Close if there are no problems
  5. Click Finish to start using Outlook

Next Steps

Outlook is now configured. You can now start using Outlook to read and send mail.
