Configuring Outlook for Windows

Setting Up a New Account

If Outlook has not already been set up to access your IMAP account, you will need to provide Outlook with some configuration settings before using it to read your mail.

1. Select "Manual Configuration"

2. Select "Internet Email"

Configuring Outlook to Access Your Account

To connect to our mail servers, Outlook will need the following configuration information:

User Information

Your Name:How you would like your name to appear on mail you send to others
E-mail Address:The email address you want to use when sending mail

Server Information

Account Type:IMAP
Incoming Mail Server:imap.srv.cs.cmu.edu
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):smtp.srv.cs.cmu.edu

Logon Information

User Name:Your SCS UserID
Password:Your SCS Mail Instance Password
Remember Password:Check this if you would like Outlook to save your password

Example Configuration

Advanced Configuration

We recommend setting several settings in the Internet E-Mail Settings dialog box. You can bring up this dialog box by clicking on the "More Settings..." button:

...and then click on the Advanced tab. We recommend the following settings:

Server Port Numbers

Incoming server (IMAP):143
Connection Type:TLS
Outgoing Server (SMTP):587
Connection Type:TLS

Server Timeouts

We recommend increasing the server timeout to around five (5) minutes.

Final Configuration

To Finish configuring Outlook:

  1. Click OK to exit the Internet E-mail Settings dialog box
  2. Click Next in the Add New Account dialog box
  3. Outlook will test your settings
  4. Click Close if there are no problems
  5. Click Finish to start using Outlook

Next Steps

Outlook is now configured. You can now start using Outlook to read and send mail.
