Mac OSX Lion 10.7 Differences
What's Different from Snow Leopard
- Rosetta is no longer available. This means PowerPC based code will not run on any Mac running OS 10.7. The following applications are no longer supported in Lion:
- Fugu
- Oracle Calendar
- Samba is no longer used for connecting to or creating Windows shares. Apple replaced it with its own SMB/CIFS implementation called SMBX and is based on Microsoft's SMB2 protocol. Benefits of SMBX include the following:
- DFS support: Macs with OS X Lion can now connect to DFS shares
- Windows file sharing is faster and not as erratic as its Snow Leopard predecessor
- Java is no longer bundled with OS X but is downloaded on demand from Apple similar to how Rosetta was installed on Snow Leopard.
- Symantec Live update requires Java so SCS Computing Facilities will be installing Java on all SCS supported Macs.
What's New in Lion
- A recovery partition is created when Lion is installed that gives the option to boot recovery tools such as disk utility or terminal. This also allows restores from a time machine backup or to reinstall the operating system.
- A complete list of new features can be found here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/features.html
