About SCS Facilities

What we do

The SCS Computing Facilities staff supports all aspects of computing for the School of Computer Science. Among the services we provide are:

  • The SCS Help Desk, user consulting & documentation
  • Hardware repair and maintenance for supported systems
  • Operating system installation and support for supported platforms
  • Desktop backups
  • Printing services, including toner, paper, and printer repairs
  • Software licensing
  • Technical procurement
  • E-mail servers and support for a wide variety of e-mail services
  • Network infrastructure, troubleshooting, & monitoring
  • Computing "infrastructure" services such as Kerberos, AFS, DNS, NTP, operation of the SCS machine room, etc.
  • Anything else related to the SCS computing environment

About the Facility

Some facts about the SCS computing environment and support staff:

  • Over 2,500 total users (faculty, staff, graduate students, & others), with over 1,500 FTE (Full-Time Equivalent people)
  • Over 4,000 computers:
    • 32% Unix
    • 60% Windows
    • 8% Macintosh
  • Over 175 printers
  • An AFS Cell with over 7 Terabytes of data
  • 600+ servers in the SCS machine room
  • 45 full-time Facilities staff members (organizational chart (PDF))
    • 90:1 Computers : Support Staff
    • 55:1 Users : Support Staff
