From: Reid Simmons To: scs faculty Subject: Siebel Fellowship Nominations Dear SCS Students and Faculty, The Siebel Scholars program was established in 2000 to recognize graduate students who have distinguished themselves through academic and leadership excellence (see http://www.siebelscholars.com/about). Thirteen leading universities in the US and China participate in the program in the areas of computer science, bioengineering, and business. Each year, five fellowships, each in the amount of $35,000 ($25K for tuition and stipend, plus a $10K cash prize, which can be used by the student in whatever way they see fit), are awarded to Carnegie Mellon SCS students in their /*final year*/ of study. Siebel Scholars are selected on the basis of /*academic excellence*/ and /*leadership*/, and awards are made without consideration for other funding that the student is already receiving. The Siebel Scholarship is open to both MS and PhD students in the School of Computer Science. The nomination criteria for students include academic, leadership, and programmatic components. In particular, each nominee must meet the following four criteria: 1. Nominee ranks within the top 10% of his/her class based on academic results 2. Nominee has a track record of distinguished research 3. Nominee demonstrates excellence in terms of leadership qualities, in the school community and/or in experience prior to graduate program 4. Nominee has completed at least one year at Carnegie Mellon and is expected to complete the graduate degree by August 31, 2015. This includes PhD students in their last year, Master's students who have been here a year (or, if the student is in a 16 or 18 month program that began by January 2014), or students in one year Master's programs who were undergraduates at CMU (this includes all 5th year MS students). To nominate a student, the faculty advisor should submit the following information to Reid Simmons (reids@cs.cmu.edu) by THURSDAY JUNE 26, 2014: * Student's Name * Nominator's Name * Planned Graduation Date (for PhD students, include a sentence or two justifying this - note that PhD students should be post-proposal at the time of nomination) * Evidence of academic record (about 2 paragraphs, including graduate GPA) * Evidence of leadership qualities (about 2 paragraphs) * Short bio (100-150 words, written in the third person) containing, at minimum, research and employment history * CV of the student (/*must include*/ current and permanent mailing addresses, university and permanent email addresses, and current and permanent phone numbers) * Digital high-resolution color photograph (to be forwarded to the Siebel Foundation for publicity purposes) Please submit all nomination materials in PDF format, aside from the photograph.
