As more and more classroom discussion moves to online asynchronous discussion forums, it becomes important to investigate ways to support those interactions to increase learning. Having teachers from the class moderate is generally effective, but teachers often have too many responsibilities to actively do so. In this project, we explore two alternate approaches to providing assistance to an online forum. First, we use an intelligent tutoring system to provide private feedback to individuals before they post their response. Second, we students from the class volunteer to moderate the discussion forum, and we use the intelligent system to assist the peer moderators. We hope that in comparing the two approaches we may develop insight into how an automated system might best support this kind of discussion.
