gloriole halo, nimbus, aureole. halo of 22 degrees the most common halo around the sun or moon. sundog a bright spot on a solar halo, often occurring in an opposing pair. (also |parhelion|) Arc of Lowitz an arc of light extending diagonally down from a 22-degree parhelion. antitwilight arch a pinkish band of light which may appear opposite the setting sun. (also |anticrepuscular arch|.) parhelic circle a bright band or circle through the sun and parallel to the horizon. anthelion a glow which appears opposite the sun at the same elevation. zodiacal light a bright region of the sky near the sun, thought to be sunlight glancing off of meteoric material. false dawn zodiacal light seen before the true dawn. noctilucent cloud (meteorol.) a type of cirrus-like cloud, seen during summer nights, thought to be meteoric dust high enough to catch the sun. Hevelian halo a faint halo at 90o around the sun or moon, attributed to ice crystals. dark segment a dark band opposite the rising or setting sun, immediately below the antitwilight arch. paraselene (meteorol.) a "mock moon", a brighter spot on a lunar halo. fogbow a rainbow formed by fog, appearing as a bright whitish arc. anticorona a glow around one's shadow, when it is cast on fog or cloud. (also "glory" or "Brocken bow") gegenschein (astron.) a patch of light antipodal to the sun on the zodiacal sphere, formed by sunlight reflecting from interplanetary dust. heiligenschein a halo around one's shadow's head.
