03-Dec-90 17:43 John.Mount@GS6.SP.CS.CMU.EDU ARRRGGGHHHH!!!!!!! Boy has this Bboard been stiff, so... Some theories I am working on: 1) Lisp code will run with all alphabetic text removed (the parens are the only semantic portion). 2) The next version of Emacs will no longer support the editing of files (all the other important features will crowd it out). 3) The SOAR -> TRS80 porting effort will have to be abandoned. 4) Theory is about to prove one theorem too many and disappear in a puff of logic. 5) The Mars rover has killed and will kill again. Some questions to ponder: 1) How come we don't have Valium in the stock room? 2) If Babbage had to take the quals would he still have loved CS enough to work on the Analytical engine? Extra credit: 1) Compare and contrast Salsman's view of reality and Moravec's "Mind Children". 2) Apply the substitution {Zen/CS, teashop/graduate_program} to the following passage: Hakuin used to tell his pupils about an old woman who had a teashop, praising her understanding of Zen. The pupils refused to believe what he told them and would go to the teashop to find out for themselves. Whenever the woman saw them coming she could tell at once whether they had came for tea or to look into her grasp of Zen. In the former case, she would serve them graciously. In the latter, she would beckon to the pupils to come behind her screen. The instant they obeyed she would strike them with a fire-poker. Nine out of ten of them could not escape her beating.
