They are very proud of their products. I bet if you call Jim directly. He will give a set of boxes or at a very low fee. I used to own a pair of CS3.5. Thiel provided me a lots of help. Their number is 606-254-9427. Use your equipment now for the moment and try some new speaker cables and interconnect (if you don't believe cables can make a difference, I can't help you). They are relatively easy to place, just don't back them in a corner unless you like boom boom bass. They are forward sounding speakers, and if you use CD exclusively, they may drive you out of the room with a very bright sound. You can also call Thiel at (606) 254-9427. They are very good in customer relationships even for 2nd hand equipment. I bought the 3.5 used also. You can give them the serial numbers on the speakers and they can tell them how old they are or if any upgrades have been made since they were made. If you intend to buy new amps, try some softer sounding equipment, and maybe try something like the B & K amps. No maintainence is needed except maybe dust the grille and clean the speaker contact once in a while. Don't remove the grille for listerning, they are meant to be on all the time unless you want to take a peek at what's underneath (dead bugs or such). Call around other Thiel dealers and see what they recommend for amps and cables. Thiel chooses dealers very carefully as do most hi-end manufacturers so you can decide what to try next. Have fun, they are nice speakers. Any good quality receiver/int-amp/amp should work fine based on the following: o Must handle a 6 ohm load. The 6ohm load of the CS2 is very stable and should not be be a problem for most units. o 80 watts per channel min. should be enough power for most appli- cations.(I don't rattle the walls but could if needed.) o You will not like the CS2s if the amp is harsh or overly bright. The latter model CS2s are not as demanding as older ones. The tweaters in some older CS2s were considered to hot for many solid state amps. I heard that there is an up grade for the tweaters in older units but cannot swear to it. (This information is not first hand experience but it did come from a source I tend to believe.) > - What sort of placement you find best for these speakers This works quite well in my room. 2 feet from the back wall. 6 feet between speakers. 3 feet from side walls. No tow-in. > - Care and maintenance needed The teak finish only requires a good commercial furniture care product. An adhesive lint roller is good for the grills. > - Anything else that you think I should know with regards to the CS2. The first part of this note should not be taken as negitive and the speakers are not extremely finicky but these are things you should keep in mind when shopping for your amp. Don't know what your budget is but I have been told that the CS2s are unbelievable with a tube amp(my next upgrade). After 10 months of home listening I would buy the same speakers if I had it to do over. Feel free to contact me if there are more questions or info needed. Better yet, let me know if you received this message(I'm fairly new at email). This showed up as a lack of authority on complex musical passages where there was a lot of low end sound in the spectrum--classical organ music, for example, much more than popular vocal stuff. At any rate, I have since acquired a Nakamichi PA7IIA, which has 225 watts per side (versus 100 for the Denon) in a STASIS circuit topology which Nakamichi licensed from Threshold, and the difference was quite obvious on the kinds of program material which previously stretched the Denon. This amp lists for ~$2200 these days, but used ones are available for about half that amount. There was an earlier version, PA7, that had 200 wpc, that is not a current model and which may go for somewhat less. That money in a Threshold will buy you half the amperage, along with some panache for U.S. high end equipment. When I demo'ed the 2's at the local dealer, I heard them through Threshold's "low end" product line, the Forte equipment and thought these sounded quite good for the money (maybe ~$2K for amp and preamp together?). At any rate, I hope this helps. As to placement, bring them away from the rear wall and point them absolutely straight forward (not tilted in). Be warned that these are designed to deliver flat response at 3 meters, so they tend to sound a bit bright much closer in, as well as in lively rooms, where there's not a lot of fabric to absorb the high end. I hope you got a good deal on your used pair, now that the 2.2's are out, much as I hate to think about how they've affected the resale value of my own pair. Either way, I think these are an abolute classic speaker and you'll probably find you're spoiled for such clarity when you listen to other speakers. I would say it's also smart to track down a pair of factory boxes; they come remarkably well-packaged, with every nook and cranny in some way protected against shock and/or damage. You may need to contact Thiel in Kentucky to get these, something which might be worth doing soon if the 2.2's are much different dimension-wise. --Leigh ------- I've had a pair of Thiel CS2s since late 1987, and I've been very satisfied with them. They have a reputation for having a frequency response that is tilted upward in the mid- to high- trebel, but I've only noticed such an aberration on several recordings that were themselves probably at fault. I drive them with Adcom components, and I use Monster cable. The Thiel CS2s are not especially fussy in terms of placement in the room, though I recommend keeping them 2 to 3 feet from the rear wall and at least 3 feet from the side walls. I have mine set about 7 1/2 feet apart. If at all possible, do not put furniture or equipment between the speakers. Their finest finer attributes include precise imaging and soundstaging, and stuff piled between them can cause degradation. Hope you enjoy them!
