Guidelines for Literature Surveys

[Problem area] [Outline] [Presentation and final paper] [Example Paper]

Problem area: Survey of an open problem in computational molecular biology, an emerging area in computational genomics or a novel high throughput biological assay that is generating data sets requiring new computational solutions. Your paper should be along the lines of a Trends or Current Opinion article. (See the topics page for some links to articles in these journals.)

The challenge is to select a topic that is neither too narrow nor too broad. I am looking for more than a simple summary of the papers that you surveyed. Bring your own creativity to bear on the subject through synthesis and interpretation of ideas from disparate sources. Your paper may be critical and/or comparative.

Outline:

Your outline should address not only the general problem area you wish to explore but also how you will focus on a well defined, limited question.  If I am concerned that your proposed approach contains a major stumbling block, I will ask you to revise it.

The paper and presentation: An example of a literature survey from a previous year.
