National Lesbian and Gay Organizations

  • Astraea, National Lesbian Action Foundation, provides financial resources and technical assistance to organizations and projects that contribute to the health and welfare of gays and lesbians.
  • Gay & Lesbian Families of America did a professional public relations campaign during the Republican National Convention in San Diego. Check out their billboards.
  • Human Rights Campaign, formerly known as the Human Rights Campaign Fund, is the largest national lesbian and gay political organization in the United States.
  • Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund
  • Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation is a media watchdog group promoting fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of lesbians and gays in the media.
  • National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is the oldest national lesbian and gay group.
  • Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) is a nationwide organization providing support for families that are learning to understand and accept their lesbian, gay, and bisexual children. There are PFLAG support groups all over the United States. The contact number for the group here in Pittsburgh is (412) 363-8839.

  • Servicemembers Legal Defense Network is a legal aid and watchdog organization to assist those who suffer from the military's discriminatory policy on lesbians and gays.
  • Gay Organizations at Carnegie Mellon

    There are several gay and gay-related organizations at CMU. The main student organization for lesbians, gays and bisexuals is cmuOUT. cmuOUT is recognized and sometimes funded by the Student Senate and has wide name recognition on campus.

    ALLIES is a recognized student organization that seeks to support lesbians, gays and bisexuals at Carnegie Mellon. ALLIES meetings are a forum for discussions of issues related to sexuality.

    ALGBE (the Association of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Employees) is the only staff / faculty lesbigay group at Carnegie Mellon. It is little more than a mailing list at this time, and is maintained by me.
