The Numbers

Through 30 June 1999, there were 687,313 reported cases of AIDS in the United States, 22,057 reported cases in Pennsylvania, and 2,225 reported cases in the Pittsburgh Metropolitan area. The CDC estimates that between 650,000 and 900,000 Americans are living with HIV, with 40,000 new infections each year. [from the CDC's HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report and Basic Statistics]
