Gay Jeans Day Reaction

College Republicans "Come Out in Khaki"

In response to Gay Jeans Day, the College Republicans posted signs announcing "Come Out in Khaki, Wednesday Oct 30, 1996". Many of the CR signs were soon postered over by other organizations, but not by cmuOUT.

It seems kinda BAD to me that college-republicans would choose to hold their Khakis day at a time that directly conflicts with Gay Jeans Day. I know that many people would want to support both groups. (I. Fay)

Simple, we are republicans, we don't like fa..... homosexuals. ....We *normal* people have to go out of our way to show that we don't approve of homosexuals. (T. Crews)
Timothy Michael Crews

I am resigning from my position as PR director of the CMU College Republicans. I find the position of the club on the Come Out in Khaki day issue to be in extremely poor taste. ...you know very well that the club's actions weren't just a protest of the use of jeans; they were directed at attacking the gay community. (E. Beldner)

...I think that having a conservative Khaki day makes us look just as desperate for supporters. It makes us look hypocrital to criticize their jeans idea and then promote our own similar idea. (P. O'Malley)

This is the party of Lincoln. This is the party of God. This is the party furthering the Judeo-Christian values that our forefathers risked their families and entire lives for. (P. Deluca)

...it really doesn't further the republican goals/values etc. when people fly off the handle and post really bitter and hateful things toward other people. (A. Klingbeil)

We would just like to thank cmuOUT for raising the level of discussion of gay rights to a new level of tastefulness with their huge posters of people fondling each others' butts. (T. Curry, E. Tempesta)

Some of the previous posts made earlier this week make the College Republicans look like a bunch of bigoted losers. (anonymous)
