How to apply a "diff"-file or "patch"

A diff or patch file comes as a
vice-0.15.x.y-0.15.j.k.diff.gz
file. This file is compressed with GNU zip, and can be uncompressed with

gunzip vice-0.15.x.y-0.15.j.k.diff.gz
to remove the .gz ending. This file is created with the diff and can be used with the patch command to modify text files. The diff file only contains the changes from one version to another version, so you have to have the original version to start from, and apply one patch after the other till you have the version you want. To apply the patch, do
cd directory_where_the_VICE_source_directory_is_in
cat vice-0.15.x.y-0.15.j.k.diff | patch -p0
mv vice-0.15.x.y vice-0.15.j.k
The important line is the middle one, where the patch command applies the diff file to the sources. After that you have to reconfigure, recompile and reinstall the new version of VICE.
