IC 2002 Trip to Kennywood

The Park

Kennywood is an excellent amusement park, just 10 miles from downtown Pittsburgh. It has five terrific roller coasters, including the recently rebuilt "Phantom's Revenge", as well as lots of other classic rides, games, etc. For more information, see the Kennywood website.

To first-years: In case you were thinking of not coming, let me point out that this may very well be the most fun you will have in the next seven, um, five years. After this, you will have an advisor, who will more than likely be watching every step you make and chastising you for indulging in any form of pleasure. You will be haunted by their visage at the entrance to every ride. Of course, you might get lucky -- your advisor might be "nice" -- but why risk it? Go to Kennywood now, before it's too late!

To everyone else: Apparently you have a "nice" advisor if you even have time to read this page. Lucky you, come join us and help convince the first-years that your advisor is typical.

All who are going should let Derek know, so that we know how many tickets to get and don't leave anyone behind.

The Bus

How are we getting there and back?

To get to Kennywood, we have a bus that will take everyone there. Just show up by 11 AM at the Newell-Simon Hall Atrium. If you want to drive, however, or have befriended a wizened seventh-year Ph.D. student with a broken-down mufflerless '85 Datsun, take I-376 to the Swissvale Exit #7 and follow the arrows to Kennywood.

To return to Pittsburgh, we will use the PAT (Port Authority Transit) bus. This is a good opportunity to get acquainted with the Pittsburgh bus system. Your CMU ID gets you onto any bus for free. The one going to and from Kennywood is the 61C. You can pick up bus schedules at the University Center. In the afternoon, the bus leaves Kennywood at around every hour and half hour. It winds through Squirrel Hill before returning to CMU. Remember to bring your CMU ID!

The Chow

Please bring some cash for food at the park. If funnel cakes and french fries aren't conducive to your diet, feel free to bring your own tofu jerky, but brown-bag it.
