THE PLOT ---------- 1) The Problem The story begins on the little-known world of Dirt, in the rural medieval village of The City (named after its founder, William The; it's presently only a village, but Will believed in planning ahead...), whose local dungeon has been acting strangely recently. Having lived near it for hundreds of years, the inhabitants of The City have gotten used to its quirks, and they see it almost as a natural resource. Monsters carrying valuable gold come out to attack the village regularly, and the tourists and heroes supply a significant part of the village's revenue. There's even a daily dungeon forecast. ("Attacks by 3-4 orcs leading 6-10 goblins, with a 40% chance of an evil magician attacking the city...") Given all this, it's understandable that, when monsters started attacking off-schedule and erratically, and fighting to the death instead of retreating, the villagers became a bit concerned. 2) The Amulets Legend states that, when times are troubled, explorers wearing the Legendary Amulets will probably be able to save the day. Thus it happened that four explorers, wearing the Legendary Amulets, descended into the dungeon to investigate the problem. (See "AMULETS.TXT" for more information on the properties of the amulets.) 3) The Dungeon It should be noted that this dungeon is somewhat different from the traditional model. Among other things, it is dynamically regenerating: New monsters constantly appear in its depths as time passes. Not everything is known about the place; the same dungeon entrance has been observed to lead to different places at different times, and nobody has ever measured the size of the Dungeon. Some suspect that it is huge, reaching throughout the entire world of Dirt, and that all dungeons everywhere are merely entrances to the one. Some suspect that the Dungeon is sentient, and that it moves about and reorganizes itself underground. Others suspect that the Dungeon is a perfectly normal set of caves, and that anybody who thinks otherwise is a flaming idiot. One thing, though, that nobody has ever suggested, is that the Dungeon has ever been used for holding prisoners. They wouldn't last a day. To the best of The City's inhabitants' knowledge, there is no Boss Of The Dungeon. Since this is a surprise attack, the heroes can expect no organized opposition in the form of ambushes. However, traps are still entirely possible...
