The letter is addressed to "Sir Adrielin of the Shining City of Hieroneous". Those with any sort of Knowledge skill at all know that Sir Adrielin is the leader of the Council of Order, and the most powerful Paladin in the city. -------------------------- Chillbreeze 3, 489 I write to you with good news, my friend: the city of Blueport still stands! The Horrors approached our city earlier today, but proved amenable to negotiation, and left without a battle. After the Horrors left, we were able to analyze their aura in some detail. We estimate that each of the Horrors has an aura of approximately twice the strength of the zombie Kraken that caused us so much trouble on Darkestnight of the year 464. That a zombie (or other weaker undead) of such power could exist in so small a body is, of course, preposterous. Instead, we suspect that they are outsiders who entered this plane from the Negative Energy Plane on Darkestnight. It is also possible (though, in our judgment, less likely) that the Horrors are in fact clerics, the personal servants of some evil god. If this is so, then each of them is of approximately the twenty-third level. I pray before Obad-Hai that this is not the case. The Horrors' actions are characterized by politeness and apparent goodwill, punctuated by periodic acts of shocking violence. (Three of our best clerics at Seaspray were nearly killed and have been left permanently weakened by the first such incident. We have been careful to avoid the possibility of a repeat.) The Horrors claim that they are not undead at all, but humans who are under a "curse" of some sort. Events at Blueport have tentatively confirmed that the Horrors are, in fact, partially alive: they saw through no less than twenty layers of Invisibility To Undead spells with no difficulty. It is possible that the Horrors are related to the Devourers, containing within themselves the trapped life-essence of some living creature. The connection appears deeper than that, though: the Horrors appear to retain the memories, and even some of the combat skills, of their adopted hosts. Also, being reminded that we recognize their undead nature appears to agitate them; if your goal is to negotiate, you are advised to treat them as human when possible. We still cannot fathom the purpose of the Horrors on this island. If murder and destruction were their goal, they would never have traveled for three days to reach Blueport, only to turn and leave with it still standing. If their goal is to convince us of their good intentions, they are singularly lacking in self-awareness: their aura betrays them for what they are wherever they go. Perhaps they wished to retrieve some artifact which had lurked near our city without our knowledge. Perhaps they merely wished to hone their skills, accustoming themselves to their new bodies and environs. More likely, though, there is some deeper game here, one we cannot yet fathom. I am including with this message a transcript of the Horrors' report of their creation. It is given from the perspective of their hosts, but may retain accuracy nonetheless. Note the mention of clerics of The Necromancer; if such a cleric can be found, capturing and interrogating him might produce vital information. In Obad-Hai, Tayric of Blueport ------------- (A word-for-word transcription of Ivellios's report is included with the message, on a separate scroll.)
