Yes, I have been sucked into the world of chess. I learned to play
as a kid and recently took it up again. After I had exhausted the
possibilities of my various video games, I took the fateful decision
to double-click the chess program icon. I duly lost the game,
so I did a bit of studying. Almost a year
later, I have a chess library that has acquired a life of its own, a
store of specialized chess knowledge guaranteed to be useless against the
raw power of the future machines, and I still cannot defeat my computer
regularly. But such are obsessions; I march on to Caissa's drumbeat.
At least I am not going to exhaust the possibilities of this game.
In the summer of 1995 I participated in my first chess tournament, the
Allegheny Chess Congress, run by the Pittsburgh Chess Club.
I got lucky and scored 2 wins and 3 losses. You can see the commented
games, but take note, I am a patzer
(provisional rating 1700).
