Bio: I am a graduate (BA in Creative Writing, 1990) and 16-year employee of Carnegie Mellon University. I serve as Managing Editor for a new robotics publication, the Journal of Field Robotics (formerly published as the Journal of Robotic Systems), under the direction of editor-in-chief Dr. Sanjiv Singh. I also act as Managing Editor with the Informedia Digital Video Understanding project, answering directly to the project's principal investigator, Howard Wactlar, with whom I've worked nine years. Prior to that, I worked seven years with the Research Documents Group, compiling large, multi-project progress reports from previously written, "other use" source material. I also created and maintained high-level administrative boilerplate material (such as facilities descriptions) for use in proposals and reports throughout the School, and worked on user documentation as requested for research projects.
Many aspects of my work have involved translating technical materials for broader audiences. I have at various times been tasked with producing: one-page, publicity-oriented summaries of research; a recruitment brochure text for a health-care project (with graphical help from another team member); brief biographies of project scientists; and public-consumption content for the Informedia website. I have written for people ranging from intelligence analysts to families of dementia patients, and worked with writers (many of whom are non-native speakers of English) to organize and refine articles, theses, and other documents.
My non-work interests include literature, jazz, cooking, cars, weird movies, and mushroom hunting and identification. My wife, Bronwyn McClure-James, and I are the proud parents of two rescued dogs. Phoebe (the Dalmatian) is seven years old. Bird is a lovely three year old Greyhound.
