Cosmetics

the campaign for safe cosmetics
Here's the gist - there are lots of toxic chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products that end up in our bodies. Some are linked to cancer, birth defects, learning disabilites, fertility problems and other health problems.
The EU bans more than 1,100 chemicals from personal care products. Guess how many are banned from products in the US? * 9 *
An industry-funded panel called the Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel - not the FDA or any other government agency - is currently in charge of reviewing the safety of cosmetics.
According to Skin Deep, the worst types of products are:   - hair color and bleach   - hair relaxer   - nail polish   - skin lightener   - nail treatment According to Skin Deep, more expensive products aren't necessarily safer.

Women's Health and the Environment Workshop Information [website]

I went to this workshop in Pittsburgh in April of 2007. There were presentations and panel discussions by a bunch of scientists. We also got a lot of info about resources on the web - if you're intersted, check out the website above. Here are some highlday tips:

Fruits and Veggies
Produce with the least pesticide (buy at the grocery store) - onions, avocado, sweet corn (frozen), pineapples, mango, asparagus, sweet peas (frozen), kiwi, bananas, cabbage, broccoli, papaya
Produce with the most pesticide (buy organic) - peaches, apples, bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, pears, grapes (imported), spinach, lettuce, potatoes
Plastic
Bad Plastics - #3 (Polyvinyl chloride aka PVC or vinyl, found in some plastic wrap and food containers), #6 (Styrene, in Styrofoam), #7 (Polycarbonate, in old Nalgene bottles and other water bottles)
  don't microwave plastic !!
