Students who wish to leave the program temporarily may request a leave of absence by submitting a request to the Associate Department Head. Leaves are initially granted for a period of no more than one year, but an extension of up to one additional year may be granted under exceptional circumstances. When an extension is granted, the conditions for return must be negotiated with the advisor and the Associate Department Head for the Ph.D. Program prior to returning to the program.
Students on leave of absence should contact the Associate Department Head two months prior to the end of the leave to indicate their plans for the next year.
