Ph.D. Courses

Sharon Burks keeps a list of past, present, and future course offerings and their descriptions.

Course Evaluation

In the middle of each semester the Course Review Committee (CRC) asks for your feedback on the courses you are taking. Please participate in this important evaluation process. Your feedback on courses is essential to keeping our courses vibrant and our instructors on their toes. Mid-course corrections can be made!

Your comments are actually welcome at all times during the term. You may submit them anonymously or not, and either to the DRC only, the instructor only, or to both.

  • Standard form. Ten questions.
  • Short form.
  • Star Area Courses

  • Prerequisites.
  • Complete listing for all star area courses.

  • Placing out. Taking five star area courses is the norm. However, if you think you might qualify either to substitute one non-star area course for a star area course or to waive out of taking any of an area's star courses, you should speak to the course instructor(s) and the appropriate Area Advocate. These are the five Area Advocates:

  • AI: Tuomas Sandholm
  • Algorithms: Danny Sleator
  • CS: Seth Goldstein
  • PL: Frank Pfenning
  • SS: Natassa Ailamaki
  • Waivers also need the approval of the Associate Department Head for the Ph.D. program.
